Mount Hermon is pleased to announce the formation of the Redwood Society, dedicated to bonding together a group of special friends who have set aside a portion of their estate for the future benefit of Mount Hermon.

For generations of families, Mount Hermon has formed a distinctive heritage, and over the decades numerous families have established lifetime legacies for those following in their footsteps. It is our hope your family will be similarly led to invest here, anticipating the marvelous impact your intentionality will have in years to come.

As Director of the Redwood Society, I can discuss gifting opportunities and recommend professionals who can help you with wise planning. Please feel free to contact me at dave.talbott@mounthermon.org. If you have already remembered Mount Hermon in your estate plan, we would like to thank you and enroll you as a charter member.

Our first reception for Redwood Society members will be held in conjunction with our AIM Celebration in May. If you are already enrolled, watch for your invitation. If you are considering membership, we would love to have you join us. Let us know how we can help.

Charter Membership in the Redwood Society remains open through 2013.

This month we celebrate our 107th birthday and rejoice in God’s continued faithfulness.

The Lord himself will come down from heaven. (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

He did that once already, and we still celebrate it every December 25th. But this will be an altogether different advent – no baby in a manger, no years of growing up in obscurity, and no cultivation of disciples before the truth is found out. This time He will come through the clouds, revealing judgment and redemption all in one heavenly appearance.

Count on that day. Our confidence as it approaches will shape how we live and how we die. It will shape our values, guide our spending, prioritize our schedules, and strengthen our resolve. We are not aimless wanderers. We stand between a perfect God and an imperfect world with an imperative: point to the Bridge between them.

Mount Hermon has been faithfully doing this for 107 years! Our mission is to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior, teach the authoritative Word of God and serve His church in our nation and throughout the world. Thank you for your help.

As you and your family experience the joy of Christmas, may you sense the love and presence of Jesus Christ. Your Mount Hermon family wishes you a blessed Christmas.

For King & Kingdom,

J.R. Loofbourrow
Director of Advancement

April 2012 began Brenda Wallace’s tenth year on the Mount Hermon staff. Brenda started as a registrar, but it was soon evident her skills fit perfectly as Registration Manager. We are consistently blessed by Brenda’s heart for people and for this ministry. She and her staff are the “face of Mount Hermon,” when guests call and as they arrive for their time in the Redwoods. Her care for her registration team keeps them all at their best.

Brenda shared with us,

“I chose to join our Associate family wanting to invest even more deeply in the lives of the people who come onto these grounds. The Lord had recently impressed me in certain ways that influenced my decision.

First, I’m gratified when people say, “You sound like you really love your job,” and I can authentically reply, “Yes, I really do.” One example is a woman I met on a plane, who’d never heard of Mount Hermon. Five months later she blew me away by attending a retreat as a result of our conversation!

The Lord also impressed on me the effect Mount Hermon has had on my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. Whether the kids come for a youth camp or we just hang out on the grounds, Mount Hermon brings us closer together. They never knew of Mount Hermon before I came here, so this is a new generation now introduced to this wonderful place.”

Like many of you, Brenda chose to invest where her heart is—in this ministry. If you’d like to know more about becoming a Mount Hermon Associate, call 831.430.1237, or reach us on the web at mounthermon.org/give.

By Kerry Phibbs

The day was Friday May 11, 2012, and the anticipation of our annual AIM Celebration was foremost in our minds. All the planning, preparation and decorating had been done, prayers had been lifted up, and we were confident the Lord would fulfill our hopes for a wonderful experience. And He certainly did!

The campus was transformed into an international travel experience straight out of the 1940’s – think Indiana Jones. This isn’t just your Grandpa’s Mount Hermon anymore. Over the years it’s become so much more! We’ve developed international partnerships across the globe, and we continue to be both amazed and grateful for the growth the Lord keeps bring to this ministry.

Beginning Thursday evening, over 450 guests poured into camp. These early arrivals were preparing to participate in our annual All Day Prayer Retreat commencing on Friday morning. This special day of prayer has “caught fire,” and there is a passion among the faithful friends who come to pray with us for all aspects of the ministry of Mount Hermon. It truly sets the tone for the rest of our AIM Celebration that same weekend.

Our AIM Celebration opened in the auditorium on Friday evening, and then retreated to the Dining Hall to “break bread” together – we had a sumptuous meal. Dick Foth, our guest speaker, shared wonderful insights, first describing how our “perspective” on our own ministry involvements begins to change as our commitment to that ministry deepens. In short, we grow in tune with our ministry investment. “Investment” was our challenge Saturday morning, as Dick helped us consider our opportunity to leverage our life efforts by investing in Kingdom work – where God always brings return.

We learned and shared together about the international relationships and connections we’ve made with many organizations across the globe. Technology has “shrunk” the world, allowing us to communicate the gospel without actually being “present.” Mount Hermon is on the forefront of this effective movement, and it’s so exciting to be partnering in this frontier.

Our AIM Celebration always leaves us with a deep sense of commitment and purpose – being connected to each other as family, and most important, serving God’s Kingdom together. It is a celebration not to be missed! We are so grateful for all of you who could be with us.

I’d like you to meet Gordon and Jan Kvamme—long-time Mount Hermon friends, faithful, committed members of our volunteer team, and part of our Associates family.

Last summer they were deeply impacted by an experience their grandson had here at camp. We were very excited they shared it with us, and they’ve allowed us to pass it on to you. We know this will touch your soul just as deeply as it did ours.

The Kvammes wrote us,

“…Last summer we sent our grandson to Ponderosa Lodge. His friend was able to join him thanks to help from your Campership Fund—thank you for making that possible! At the end of the week, when we picked them up the first thing they asked was, ‘will we be able to come back NEXT year?’ You can easily imagine the joy—theirs and ours!

Jan and I would like to make that same experience possible for twenty-five other campers in 2012. Twenty-five times three hundred thirty-one equals eight thousand two hundred and seventy-five dollars. May God use these camperships to bless and reach many people for His Kingdom…”

Through the Kvammes, twenty-five additional young people have now experienced the love of Jesus in community at Mount Hermon this past summer. Whether at Ponderosa Lodge, in Redwood Camp or up at Kidder Creek, we know Jesus met them.

With Gordon and Jan, you too can “give” Christ’s love to other campers. We prayerfully ask for your support of “Give Camp 331,” which will ensure someone else will encounter the love of Jesus here at Mount Hermon.

It’s January and a fresh new year lies ahead. Over the last century God has generously blessed Mount Hermon through people just like you. Your gift is part of a living legacy.

A wonderful note accompanied a 2011 year-end gift from a family with their own living legacy.

“…Last summer we sent our grandson to Ponderosa Lodge.
We’re excited about 2012 because the opportunities to help people focus on Jesus Christ continue to grow! Young and old can come to Mount Hermon, step away from the distractions of daily life and hear the clear loving message of the Gospel. The need has never been greater, and because of your prayers and financial investments, you are a part of all that happens here.

Thank you for joining us on this adventure! With the new-year we start all over again and we pledge to apprise you of our needs and to do so with integrity. If we can serve you in any way, we are always as close as your phone, so please feel free to call us anytime at 831.430.1237.

On behalf of Roger Williams and the entire Mount Hermon family, thank you for being our partners in ministry!

I recently heard someone say:

Be ye fishers of men. You catch them – He’ll clean them.

When you think about it, Mount Hermon is on a non-stop fishing trip. Through God’s grace, there are plenty of life-changing fish stories to tell.

This past summer at Redwood Camp our staff was encouraged and challenged to be on the lookout for God on the move. We called them God Sightings, and they were amazing, exciting and numerous. Each staff member was asked to detail at least two. Below is how one counselor shared one of her experiences:

This summer the Lord has been teaching me and testing me in issues of trust. So often, I become anxious, and this occurs when I take matters of God, rip them from His hands, and clumsily try to juggle them. One week, my cabin was full of campers that knew nothing of Jesus or the Gospel. There was Buddha, reincarnation; you name it who, but no Jesus. I was overwhelmed and prayed that the Lord would at least plant some seeds. By the end of the week, Christ had been so transformational in my cabin that my girls committed their lives to Him. They spoke easily and with joy about the Gospel. They felt God’s love and presence as He perfectly orchestrated moments during the week that brought them to Him. I just needed to trust and lift my hands so that He could use His.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

Thanks for being such an important part of our fishing crew! Your prayer and financial support enable the nets to be cast over and over and over again!

Part of our mission is to … serve His church in our nation and throughout the world. One of the ways we “serve His church” is through strategic ministry partnerships. These partnerships have always been part of Mount Hermon’s DNA and today encompass dozens of regional, national and international ministries.

In order to reach young people who might never be able to come to camp, we’ve initiated partnerships with three organizations ministering directly to at-risk youth:

Angel Tree ministers directly to children who suffer deeply when they see a mom or dad taken away to prison.

Bayside of South Sacramento is a church experiencing explosive growth. Bayside South is bringing the message of Jesus to the heart of downtown Sacramento.

Signs of Hope/Help One Child ministers to foster children. These are kids who have often bounced around from home to home while going in and out of foster care.

Note: last summer over six dozen kids from these organizations came to Mount Hermon thanks in part to your support. This summer we expect even more!

It’s been said: “You have to go out on the limb to reach the fruit”…do you think that applies to ministry? We do, which is why these ministry partnerships continue to be part of Mount Hermon’s DNA!

Sociologists tell us that even introverted people will influence an average of 10,000 people in their lifetime. Just think about that! Someone who’s not even trying will impact many. What might one person do if he or she is intentional – as Jesus directed us to be?

Last summer we asked many of our family camps: “What was most significant or meaningful about your week?” A first-timer responded: “Confirmed my belief in Jesus Christ.”

There are hundreds of responses I could share with you. But I choose this one. Think about that statement… “confirmed my belief in Jesus Christ.” In a society that causes us to face fear, futility and frustration much of the time, how many lives will this person influence for the Kingdom in the years ahead: 100, 1000, 10,000…? At Mount Hermon, lives continue to be transformed by Jesus Christ every week!

Thank You for being part of God’s plan and provision for Mount Hermon. Like the psalmist in Psalm 9, we continue to thank God from full hearts. We are whistling, laughing and jumping for joy. We are singing His songs. We pray that this month you will experience God with wide-open eyes and hearts. Together we will continue impacting people’s lives for Jesus Christ.

What kind of impact potential has God put inside you?

Linda Kay, our Child Care Coordinator writes:

One week at Child Care we had two brothers with special needs. The younger one was mildly autistic, and the older one, recently adopted from foster care, had some behavior issues as well. They did great with some extra special care from our staff, right up until the last night when we paged their mom to come down a little early. She was full of praise for the care her boys had received in a challenging incident.
This family also had two other older children in Day Camp. Because of the special needs her boys have, child care has become impossible. As a result, they never have time away as a couple. Because of Mount Hermon’s Child Care, this week was the first time in 10 years that she and her husband were able to go on a date. They went walking hand-in-hand in the redwoods. While at the adult dinner, she said she almost cried as she realized how long it had been since they had enjoyed a meal, just the two of them.

She later shared they were here on a military scholarship. For us this was a special privilege, to serve a family with such big hearts, who pour into kids unwanted or loved by others, even while the dad is serving our country.

Charlie Broxton, Director of Youth Ministries, reports:

Our lessons this summer were on the faithfulness of God and what it means to have a real relationship with him. We taught each student a simple method for personal daily Bible Study and challenged them to continue the practice beyond camp for the next 21 days.

Ben, one of our counselors, shared that four guys in his cabin are taking the 21-Day Challenge together when they return home. They are calling it the 21-Meeting Challenge. They are going to meet every day for the 20 days following camp to read through the assigned passages and share with each other what God is teaching them.

And a high school camper writes:

“Kevin was an amazing counselor who really understood me. A lot of the problems and questions I challenged him with, he was able to answer in a really simple, yet powerful way. He taught me so much about God’s love and grace. I told him a lot about times in my life where I didn’t feel His love, but he gave me a verse that crushed any doubts I had about God’s love. (Romans 8:38-39). We also talked about some things that I have been doing wrong in my life, but I learned from him so much about love and grace. Thanks for hiring Kevin, he changed my whole perspective on Christianity and life.”

Chafer Cox, Director of Redwood Camp writes:

This summer our lessons were about the real people that Jesus encountered and how meeting Him changed their lives. Below are some quotes by primary campers (2nd and 3rd graders) about what they learned in their Bible studies.

• About Zaccheus (yep, we sure did)

• Jesus loved Zaccheus even though he was doing bad things because he knew what his heart was like—that he wanted to change.

• We learned what it means to seek. I like learning how to seek God and that He seeks us too.

• No matter how many times we mess up God still loves us.

During Victory Circle times campers shared:

“My parents aren’t Christians, but I learned I can choose what to believe for myself.”

“That some Bible stories are actually pretty cool.”

“I learned I like to sing songs about Jesus.”

“Why the heck did I ask Jesus into my heart if I don’t know Him very well. Then, I learned He knows me better than I know Him. And, that’s a start.”

“I already learned this, but I want to recap it—Jesus is awesome!”

After a particularly hard week for staff, counselors shared what God had been doing in their cabins—an entire primary cabin accepted Jesus as their Savior, an entire junior cabin did as well, not to mention several other individuals in cabins. God is good!

Jim Culp, a pastor at Orchard Church writes:

Our group spent an incredible day on the Klamath River with the staff of Kidder Creek Camp. Many of these students from Chico, CA, whose lives consist of poverty, homelessness and family disaster, never leave the county apart from this trip.

We watched our students absorb the beauty—and the challenges—around them. As they conquered their fears to jump off a 40-foot cliff, and forded the swift water around Dragon’s Tooth, they began to trust us as their counselors, and their friends. We saw them let go of their pride, their reputations, and their “credibility” and be kids again.

While we were working our way up the canyon to the falls, “it” happened. A life-hardened high school student, who has spent much of his teenage existence in detention centers, lost his tough demeanor and became a kid for the first time in a long time. In the middle of that creek, he stopped and looked around at where we were: in a crystal clear creek, in the middle of a box-canyon on our way to a spectacular waterfall. Just then, one of the Kidder Creek staff said to him, “Can you believe God made this for you…so you could see His beauty? And God says that as beautiful as this is, you are His masterpiece.” For the rest of the time, our student went from friend to friend saying, “Can you believe God made this for you?”

Back at camp, the calluses our students had allowed to cover their hearts were sloughed off by the fantastic day on the River. They sang, hugged each other, and prayed with tenderness. We were able to connect with these students in ways we’d been unable to before. Kidder Creek’s wonderful staff and amazing program helped us take our youth to a new level spiritually.

Last June an article in the Wall Street Journal caught my attention and focused my prayers, it was entitled: Donations Slip Amid Anxiety. It began as follows: “Faced with continued economic uncertainty, Americans cut back on their charitable giving again last year. For the second year in a row, we have seen the deepest decline ever recorded by the Giving USA Foundation, which has tracked annual giving since 1956.”

Our summer season was ready to launch and for a moment I blinked, then I remembered the three critical “game changers” that we build our Mount Hermon Advancement ministry on:

1. Generous giving to Mount Hermon is not predicated solely on the work of staff, but rather on God’s work in people.

2. Generosity flows from transformed hearts as they conform to the image of Christ, who is generous.

3. Mount Hermon’s resource-raising is not about securing gifts, rather it is about encouraging spiritual transformation – helping people become givers rich toward God.

Our task is to minister to people in such a way that they simply decide to give – joyfully! If it were not for the amazing power of the Holy Spirit, the enemy would surely laugh us completely out of his way.

Thank you for being part of God’s plan and provision for His ministries here at Mount Hermon. This is Kingdom work and as such it reaches far beyond bottom line dollars. Together we will continue impacting lives for Jesus Christ!

There are so many stories from this past summer. Let me share a particularly moving letter I received a few weeks ago that accompanied a gift:

…My son Nate is currently deployed and wanted me to tithe for him. Here’s a check for $100 to go towards your Military Campership Fund. Thanks for being such a refuge for many! I’ve attended your Christian Writers Conference and love Mount Hermon!

Take care, and on behalf Nate, thanks for supporting military families. This is his 4th deployment and he is now a single parent with full custody…TOUGH! But he appreciates Mount Hermon helping out people like him.

In Jesus Love,
Denise on behalf of SSgt Nate

J. R. Loofbourrow Director of Advancement

Mount Hermon has experienced another wonderful summer of God’s grace, love and joy. Thank You for your support. Your gifts don’t just fix “stuff” and provide “stuff.” They are part of the bigger picture that God has for this special place, where people are transformed, healed, rejuvenated, and equipped!

Update: Another gift just came in from Denise on behalf of Nate. She shared the great news that he is coming home SAFE from his 4th deployment to see his kids and family – PTL!!!

For King and Kingdom,

J. R. Loofbourrow

A gift to the ministries at Mount Hermon is an investment with an eternal perspective. Sometimes our Heavenly Father blesses us with a small glimpse of that. Such was the case last month.

From Redwood Camp (1st – 5th graders): What did you learn about yourself this week?

“When you seek Jesus, He will run into you!”

“Here at Redwood Camp I finally accepted Jesus into my life.”

“Why did I ask Jesus into my heart if I don’t know him very well? Then, I learned He knows me better than I know Him. And, that’s a start.”

From Ponderosa Lodge (Jr. High & High School):

“This week has been super powerful and life changing for me. I struggled with a very difficult year, and through that I turned my back on Jesus Christ and focused on bettering my own life. But here, I embraced God like I never have before. I’m now stronger, more faithful and much closer to God himself. I realize that I never was really alone and that if I had turned to God earlier He could’ve helped me through all of my struggles.”

J. R. Loofbourrow Director of Advancement

The time is coming when God the Father will turn to Jesus and say, “Okay, Son, I’ve had enough. Let’s gather the family.” Your gifts and your prayers continue to provide just a little more time for the scores of children, teens and adults who are accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. They are a testimony to the mission of Mount Hermon, a mission all about invading lives with the love of Christ. Now, more than ever, Thank You for choosing to join us!

To say summer is in full swing, is putting it mildly!

Thousands of people are encountering and connecting with our Heavenly Father through the clear compelling message of God’s love. From the towering Redwoods and Ponderosa Pines to the cascading Ferndale Falls, everywhere you look there are visual pictures of the grace, beauty and majesty of our loving God.

There are still a variety of Saturday night concerts that we commend to you. Great food, great music and a beautiful setting in the Santa Cruz Mountains…sounds fantastic doesn’t it? As our friend Chuck Swindoll from Frisco, Texas would say, “Y’all come.”

Your financial contribution plays a part in allowing us to impact lives for the Savior. Pray for us. Come see us. But, above all, pray for us. Please pray that more people like you will choose to become part of God’s financial plan for His ministries here. Several financial opportunities need to be addressed before the summer is over.

On behalf of Roger Williams, Ron Demolar, Dave Talbott, Kerry Mancarella, Debbie Franck and the entire Mount Hermon family, I thank you…

Kidder Creek is Mount Hermon’s most northern outpost, bordering the Marble Mountain Wilderness and Klamath National Forrest. Kidder’s staff maximizes this amazing location for ministry and life transformation. Here’s a peek:

“Thank you for the amazing experience you gave my son. He committed his life to God at camp!”

“I expected to learn a lot about horses, but I didn’t know I would learn so much about Jesus.”

“Kidder Creek is where I first got to know my Savior, it was where I first shared my Savior with others, and it is where I return when I need to get a little closer to God.”

“Kidder Creek has allowed me to experience God in a richly deep way; to be challenged, broken, healed, loved, and discipled. Without Kidder Creek, I might not have known Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, let alone have the deep relationship with God that I have today. I have seen God work in miraculous and unfathomable ways in the lives of those who come to Kidder Creek.

We are already thanking God for the lives that will be transformed throughout Mount Hermon this summer. We invite you to pray with us and thank Him ahead of schedule!

It’s coming! I don’t know exactly when; but we have been told that dry weather is just around the corner. Dry weather puts our construction, grounds and maintenance crews in a “full-steam-ahead” mode. Please pray for their safety and the myriad of details to be addressed during the next few weeks.

We also have two new leaders on our Program Team. Charlie Broxton is our new Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries. Among other things, Charlie will lead the ministry at Ponderosa Lodge this summer. Chafer Cox is our new Director of Children’s Ministries, and will lead the ministry at Redwood Camp. Both Charlie and Chafer served on our summer staff, then on to seminary and positions as pastors before following the Lord’s leading to come back to Mount Hermon.

Charlie and Chafer’s vision and prayer is to see lives transformed. Charlie recently shared that: “Transformed lives don’t go back to old ways of living. Transformed lives become more and more like Jesus and fall more and more in love with Jesus.” Please pray for Charlie and Chafer as they lead their staffs in another tremendous summer of sharing Jesus Christ with children and teenagers.

Every year thousands of lives at Ponderosa Lodge, Redwood Camp and the Conference Center are being changed for Jesus Christ. The exciting thing is that you are part of all of it. Thank you for saying yes to God’s plan for His ministries at Mount Hermon.

Ministry has always been about pressing on as our Father’s work is forward thinking work.

A couple of weeks ago we had a mens group from the Christian City Church of San Francisco. If you asked them what their church is passionate about they would tell you “…we are passionate about spreading the truth of Jesus Christ, saving the lost, making disciples and raising up leaders to transform the world.” Part of their mission is to plant 1,000 new churches all over the world by 2020. They call this their “20/20 Goal” and they’re well on the way to achieving it!

Each year Mount Hermon serves hundreds of ministry partners like these men from Christian City Church of San Francisco who come to reflect, refresh, reload and move forward with their important Kingdom Work. Want to hear some really great news?

One of the guys who came with this San Francisco mens group was Orlando. All weekend Orlando was surrounded by men who loved him, invested in him and prayed for him. There were a lot of reasons why attending this weekend retreat almost didn’t happen for Orlando, but on Sunday morning at their closing service those reasons all melted away as Orlando gave his heart to the Lord!

Your gifts to Mount Hermon aren’t just about camperships, new buildings or repairs. Your gifts are about people…people who experience Jesus Christ in a new dynamic way. Thank you for partnering in our mission and vision.

Trinity International, Moody Bible Institute, Wheaton, in Chicago

Hope, Calvin, Cornerstone, in Michigan

Taylor, Indiana Wesleyan, Huntington and DePauw in Indiana

Bidwell Presbyterian Church in Chico, Simpson College, UC Davis, William Jessup University and Bayside Church in Sacramento, California

It is cold out in the mid-west in February for a California boy like me but we talk to some great students every year that would love to spend a summer working in a camp in California!

We are pretty much in the selection process for summer staff now but we are still getting applications (middle March) on a daily basis. If you know of some good students that should be encouraged to apply, let them know. We have great candidates but are always open to more applications.

This will probably be my last year to visit these schools because we have a great new younger person who is ready to take on this assignment. Charlie Broxton is our new Youth Director at Mount Hermon and will oversee the Youth Programs at Mount Hermon and Ponderosa Lodge. He comes to us from Twin Lakes Church in Aptos (near Santa Cruz) and is uniquely gifted for this ministry. I like the way he works with people and believe he will be a great addition to our staff to direct our Youth Programs and to pick up recruiting in the mid-west.

Do you remember when Abraham took Isaac on that trip to Moriah where God had told him to sacrifice his son? Well, that road had to be the loneliest, longest, darkest, most confusing road that he had ever walked before. Abraham did not have his act totally together. Remember how he lied to Sarah? Even though he had his faults, Abraham just hung on to his faith and kept walking. Abraham’s faith did not mean that he should not have doubts or questions. But, it did mean that he had to be obedient.

Economic turmoil, job loss, political unrest, health issues, fractured relationships—uncertainty and fear may be closing in on you or those you love. So, if you’re on your own personal walk on the road to Moriah, hang in, hold on, and keep walking. This is not the time to grow faint but to stay your course.

I encourage you to reflect on the role the myriad of ministries at Mount Hermon play in the lives of thousands of men, women, boys, girls and teens every year!

May you feel the warmth of God’s arms around you as you focus on Him.

In early June, just before the busy summer season, one of Mount Hermon’s mini-vans was involved in an accident. Thankfully no one was injured in the collision, but the van was totaled. Losing one of our much needed vehicles could not have happened at a worse time.

Two days later a friend of Mount Hermon contacted us. They were in the process of getting a new car and expressed a desire to donate the mini-van they no longer needed. This vehicle was exactly what we needed and only had 40,000 miles! It could not have come at a better time. Praise the Lord! Friends of Mount Hermon provide us with volunteer help, financial support, and gifts—such as a mini-van—that enable ministry to continue.
